Freeway is a free online service of First Productions, Inc., a provider of Internet products and services to customers worldwide since April 2001. First Productions, Inc. is a privately-held company located in Winter Springs, Florida.

Freeway was developed in June 2004 to solve a problem - the difficulty of generating driving directions to an address found on a web page. Before Freeway, one would have to open a new browser window, navigate to their favorite driving directions web site, usually then click a link for driving directions, enter in their home street address, city, state, and Zip code, and the street address, city, state, and Zip code of their destination, and then press the Generate button to finally get the directions.

The developers at First Productions saw a better way. Since one's home address usually doesn't change and the destination address is already on a web page, why should all of this information have to be manually re-typed by hand? By reusing some of the technology used to create FirstProductions QuickSearch (which enables one to search FirstProductions Directory for any text selected on a web page) and creating new, innovative address-parsing technology to combine with it, Freeway was born.

In January 2006, First Productions, Inc. announced the availability of a Freeway Driving Directions extension for the Firefox web browser, increasing Freeway's compatibility.
